Breast milk is essential for the healthy growth and development of babies and young children. Breastfeeding parents also receive important health benefits, such as a reduced risk of breast cancer and diabetes. Health Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommend providing only breast milk to babies until six months of age, and then continuing to breastfeed with appropriate complementary feeding up to two years of age and beyond.

New Brunswick has adopted the Baby-Friendly Initiative as a strategy to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding, while improving the quality of healthcare provided to women/birthing parents, babies, and families.
